AUTHOR VISITS

Why should your school organise an author visit?

"Maisy and Daisy Move House"

Michelle lives with her husband and two young children in Perth, Western Australia, in a northern suburb. Michelle is happy to travel to regional schools and towns, however a travel/accommodation fee may apply. Michelle is happy to coordinate with multiple schools to reduce this fee.

"Maisy and Daisy Move House" introduces Maisy and her wheelchair Daisy. It is a fun, rhyming book, that is easy to read, and can be used to discuss all of the topics below...

Disability

"Maisy and Daisy Move House" can be used as a gentle introduction to disability. What a disability is and what it looks like can be discussed, helping teachers understand each child's own experiences with disability.

Inclusion

A Maisy is young, and would be a similar age to students, they can see what her interests are, and through the presentation, see what they have in common with Maisy. This builds a commonality and connection, which children can then apply in real-life, when meeting other children with disabilities.

Accessibility

"Maisy and Daisy Move House" focuses on accessibility through ramps. This topic is taken from the home environment and then applied to the community. The children are then asked to think of ways that they influence accessibility in their own communities.

Adaptive Equipment

In "Maisy and Daisy Move House" a variety of adaptive equipment is shown through the pages, including for fun and leisure, and for daily life. The inclusion of this equipment was intentional to show the different ways play can look like, and how each daily living task may be adapted so that each child can participate.
